Circular Beauty

Sustainability has long been an important value for LUMENE. It started 20 years ago, when we introduced our first upcycled ingredient: cloudberry seed oil, sourced as a sidestream from the food industry.  Since then, LUMENE has worked to apply circular economy principles, including the use of upcycled ingredients sourced from industrial sidestreams.

CERTIFIED B CORP

LUMENE is officially a Certified B Corporation™ (B Corp) — recognition of our commitment to a more sustainable, equitable future.

Certified B Corporations are companies verified by B Lab to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, with a public commitment to stakeholder governance.

LUMENE was certified in 2024 and has since been recertified under the new, more demanding V2 standards. The new B Lab Standards replace the previous points-based assessment with mandatory minimum requirements across seven impact topics covering areas such as governance, employee wellbeing, environmental impact, and community engagement verified by an independent third party.

For us, this achievement reflects a journey spanning more than two decades — from launching our first upcycled ingredient to standing among the very few companies worldwide to meet B Corp's highest bar yet.

Joining the B Corp community is a milestone in our sustainability journey. It reflects more than 20 years of work with circular economy principles and our commitment to the values and standards promoted by the B Corp movement.

What is circular beauty?

PIONEERS OF CIRCULAR BEAUTY

Circularity refers to the circular economy model, which considers the entire life cycle of materials and challenges the traditional linear take-make-waste economy. The goal: maximize resource efficiency and minimize waste.

At LUMENE, we aim to apply circular economy principles in our products. One example is how we upcycle ingredients from sidestreams of our local Nordic food and forest industries. In 2001, we introduced our first upcycled ingredient: cloudberry seed oil, sourced as a sidestream from the Finnish food industry. Cloudberry seeds are packed with nourishing oils and vitamins, perfect for skin.

Today, many of our skincare ingredients are upcycled from the side streams of our local Finnish food and forest industries.

LOCAL R&D AND PRODUCTION

Local production and in-house product development, based at our headquarters in Espoo, Finland, drive everything we do.

Our in-house manufacturing gives us direct control over quality, ingredients and environmental impact, while letting us move quickly on new ideas and respond to what our customers need. The LUMENE factory uses 100% renewable electricity generated from hydropower, while renewable district heating further supports low-emission operations.

Local production, paired with agile, innovative R&D, shapes our product decisions alongside consumer insight and market trends. Our product development focuses on the balance between efficacy and environmental considerations.

Sustainability

LESS MATERIALS, LOWER IMPACTS

Circularity is central to our packaging choices.

LUMENE's packaging strategy is built around five principles: reduce, reuse, recyclable, recycled, and renewable. Reducing environmental impact and ensuring product safety are top priorities in how we select materials — we aim to reduce excess material, maximize recyclability, and use recycled or bio-based materials wherever feasible.

We continue to apply these same five principles to every new packaging design we develop.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

LUMENE is an active corporate citizen contributing to the well-being of the surrounding society and collaborating beyond company borders.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy guides how we give back. We hold ourselves to strong work ethics and inclusive people practices, including our DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) initiatives, and we do business with integrity and transparency.

Our commitment to the communities around us shows up in partnerships that foster inclusion and equality. Mental health is central to this work, through partnerships and well-being initiatives designed to build awareness and resilience.

Through its long-term partnership with MIELI Mental Health Finland, LUMENE seeks to promote mental wellbeing and help ease appearance-related pressures. LUMENE’s collaboration with MIELI Mental Health Finland began in autumn 2024, when the company made its first donation of €15,000 to support the national Sekasin-chat service for young people. Since then, the partnership has grown: at the end of 2024, LUMENE carried out a study together with MIELI to better understand appearance-related pressures among Generation Z. As part of the company’s social responsibility work, LUMENE continued to participate in the Green Ribbon campaign in 2026 and donated €20,000 to MIELI Mental Health Finland to support domestic mental health services and crisis assistance.

Our long-term nonprofit partners include Girls' House of Espoo, Tukikummit, and Helsinki Pride. Our relationship with Girls' House of Espoo spans almost 10 years, including headquarters site visits and product donations for their events.

As a B Corp-certified company, we're built to contribute positively to society and create long-term value for all our stakeholders.
